Today, digging through another box of cables, I found I have a
530-1685.  So I now can hook up my spif with the Approved Cable.

I may someday get around to buzzing them out, to see if they really are
both wired straight through.  (Though even if they are equivalent in
terms of DC continuity they might not be interchangeable; serial ports
are far less sensitive to the vagaries of cables than many other
things, and I don't know whether the 501-1840-to-chassis link is
sensitive to the details of its cabling.)
