The 32M board is not the only memory board for the 3/260. I got my first 3/260 from a guy who did he work on it from new and then acquired it when his employer retired it. It came with an 8M board.
One of the Sun hardware references lists memory board compatibility does not indicate that the 32M board is compatible with the 3/260 but does indicate it is compatible with a Sun 4 board, I think the 4/260. Note that when I say “32M board” and “3/260 [CPU board]”, that is shorthand for specific Sun part numbers.
The CV HW install manual that I have says that 4M and 8M boards can go in the optional memory slots. But, unless I got one in the 3/260 I acquired a couple weeks ago, I don’t have a (completely) working 8M board.
