Agreed -- not very useful.

At the risk of being repetitive, do you have a cert chain that goes back 
to a trusted pubkey?  Your correspondent may have such a cert chain but 
that does not imply that you do.

Also, I presume that you followed the instructions in smime-notes.txt.
