Depends. From my PoV. I've done thorough cleanings of LaserJet 4, 4+ and 5, including adding a Zener diode for lessening standby noise.

Anyway. I was shocked beyond belief that to reach the rolls pulling the paper out of the cassette, I apparently needed to disassemble the complete printer. Needed one room's floor to orderly place the stuff coming out of this thing.
Or is that what you call "messy"? :-)

Thanks! I'm now officially and consciously aware that it's not cheap screws or worn screwdrivers which sometimes drive me mad!

Well, depending on the transport options and distance to cover, taking it on one piece might be quite exhausting. :-)
