Or, just possibly, people who understood that there is no such thing as
"superior", only "superior for $PURPOSE" or "superior with respect to
$METRIC", and were speaking in a context where it's the end-user
goodness metric, or mass-market success, or some such, that "superior"
is being measured with respect to.

They may hve been technical people, even. As much as some technical
people do not understand that there is a world beyond the technical,
some do.

As a technical geek, I prefer SCSI too. I'm sad at how close to dead
it appears to be. I've got one SCSI device I have no good post-SCSI
replacement for; it's one reason I still have SCSI cables and such.

But, as a sysadmin, I prefer IDE (and, now, SATA) - for disk - because
it's significantly closer to "it Just Works". Not as performant. Not
as flexible. Not as elegant. But a lot closer to the hassle-free
"just hook it up and it works" that makes a sysadmin's life easier.

Which do I think is superior? That depends on whether I'm speaking
from my technical geek mindset or my sysadmin mindset.

USB likewise. In technical and aesthetic respects, I hate USB. But,
for all that it's neither universal nor a bus, as Tony Duell used to
say, it is really really useful for a whole bunch of use cases.

I'm not sure whether that makes me more of a curmudgeon or less.
