[rescue] cd-rom rot

Obviously, it was unreadable. Have others seen such a thing before? The
CD has been stored in my house, so not somewhere cold/damp/..

We all know tapes do not have endless lives, but I am now also worrying
about CDs.

Yes, I started hearing about it about ten years ago but only about first 
generation (i.e. 80s) audio CDs.  It could begin affecting data CDs made 
on the older equipment or with the same stock from around the same era, 
but CDs were rare enough back then that people haven't noticed it.
