Compare that to the BSD crowd, who has done only half of it and succeded. They
have a product that runs on almost every platform. The difference is that it
is worthwhile to some people and worthless to others. They are not trying to
as you say, please everyone, which eventually pleases (almost) no one.
The other thing that harms Linux IMHO is the GPL. While it does have its 
advantages, it prevents people from investing serious money in something new.
It has to be well proven and established to the point that other people can't
sell it, even if they take the source code and compile it.
