Unfortunately, the VSIMMs do contain proprietary ASICs, not just DRAM. 
Only a small part of the cg14
subsystem is contained in the memory controller (the SMC), and a trio of 
ASICs are on the VSIMM itself,
the VBC to control the memory, the MDI (which is most of the cg14), 
which handles all the rendering plus
a separate RAMDAC.

I am not aware of any detailed (programming) documentation for the 
cgfourteen system, just the brief datasheets.
