I'm sure this has been mentioned already, but have you tried to netboot the Sun ?
This is quite easy to setup and I've used it for all my Suns over the years at different points. Basically involves storing a boot image on your Linux box, setting up some config to listen to ARP network packets and then setting up NFS to share a drive.
It is particularly useful for earlier Sun 3 and even Sun 2 era machines, as getting HD working for those systems is challenging.
A quick search for 'netbook a sun sparcstation' will bring up various how to guides.
IIRC the SS1 can take a 100MBit SBUS network card if you can find one that is compatible - which would give decent performance.
