There is.  How do you think so many SCSI devices from so many
manufacturers manage to interoperate?

Unfortunately, the SCSI spec has evolved significantly over the years,
so to some excent it's yet another case of xkcd #927.  Fortunately, in
many cases there is a significant level of backward compatibility (both
new host with old device and old host with new device; SCSI is closer
to symmetric than a lot of other disk-interface specs).
