I do find value in continuing to separate VMs from storage, and thus
have been running one or more Proxmox machines and one TrueNAS machine
for a long time.

The downside to the DL360pG8 is that a lot of stuff is starting to move
to requiring x86-64-v3 (Haswell or newer on desktop, Xeon E5 v3 or newer
on  DL360p style hardware), and for the Xeon's that means a change from
DDR3 to DDR4 and they are choosing to make this requirements change
right when the price of DDR4 and DDR5 are through the roof, that is
expected to last for several years, and so being able to add stick with
or add back more DDR3 systems would be really helpful.

One application on my currently one Proxmox server (Xeon E5 v4
generation) is not playing well with sharing the hardware, and I've been
contemplating getting an older DDR3 server to move everything else to.
However, that makes it much harder to run Rocky 10 on top of the
hypothetical older VM server.  I really wish I would have invested more
in hardware upgrades in 2024.
