Not only rare; 4MB VSIMMs are useful. Some people - me, if I weren't
in a "shedding hardware" phase - would buy it for that alone.
I'm actually somewhat surprised nobody has produced an aftermarket
VSIMM by now; I would think recent tech would make it easy, but perhaps
there are issues I know nothing about.

I agree about the hobbyist-vs-commercial market. Find the right
commercial buyer, someone who has something regulatorily approved with
such a machine, and you can pretty close to name your own price (fuzzy
memory says tens of thousands of dollars - recertifying the system with
some other component can cost a LOT more than that). But those buyers
are even rarer than 4M VSIMMs. In the hobbyist world, such things are
often passed around for free (or nearly) when two hobbyists know one
another and the donor trusts the recipient to take good care of it.
