I also have been using MacPorts for quite a long time, about 20 years,
and recommend it.

The risk of supply-chain type attacks has long been a concern for me. In
addition to the technical details of how projects secure their bits, trust
in the people in the organizations responsible for operating systems and
package managers is a factor for me. Jordan Hubbard's involvement in Mac
Ports (esp. its creation) gave me confidence in the integrity of the
project. He was a cofounder of FreeBSD, and for quite a long time he was
Director of Unix tech. at Apple.
