Hm, perhaps making them work the other day was the last gasp of the
battery in that chip.

Could be.  I should see if I have any more 48T02s kicking around.  I
also maybe should file this one down enough to add external battery to
it; I've had that work (but I've also had it fail, usually because
solder refuses to stick).
