No, you're completely correct.  I never ran mine long term with the case 
off, but I think in my case the switch was starting to go faulty and 
sometimes would trip while the machine was running. Which, as a I 
recall, immediately shut the entire computer off. So I bypassed it 
rather than replace it.  But a very good point
