Very true - I had an LX I think, running NetBSD 9.x for fun and found that the use of the PAM login process made a login on the console take about 10 seconds. Other parts remained somewhat zippy, but I was running with no X11 and about 16 or 32MB RAM, with myself being the only user.

Depends on which NetBSD. More recent NetBSD has gotten significantly
more bloated, especially if you use GENERIC instead of a kernel
configured for just your use case.
I still run 1.4T on my SPARCs and VAX, primarily for this reason: it
does what I want and is lighter-weight than the other versions I
consider options.
