They're not VME, they communicate with the CPU board over what Sun
called the P2 bus. The 2 outer rows of pins on the P2 connector and
the middle row of pins on the P3 connector are unused and user
defined. Sun called it the P2 bus and used it for things like CPU to
memory interconnects, framebuffer to graphics processor interconnects,
and on some of the 12 and 16 slot back planes the middle slot would
connect its P2 bus to the internal SCSI bus and there were special
SCSI boards that had no external connector that would plug into them.
