Yep.

Hence why I think that it's diagnostic data.

Does the following produce any reasonable output for the test.pem file?

    openssl x509 -noout -subject -subject_hash -ext subjectAltName 
-dates -serial -issuer -issuer_hash -in test.pem

If you don't get lines that make sense, make sure that the test.pem file 
has reasonable contents:

  - Begins with "-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----"
  - Ends with "-----END CERTIFICATE-----"
