What happens if you save the email to a file (named test.eml below) and 
try the following command:

    openssl smime -verify -in test.eml -noverify -signer test.pem -out 
test.txt

N.B. the openssl command will generate test.pem and test.txt for you.

When I run the command against valid emails I get "Verification 
successful" printed to STDERR.
