Surprisingly, search.brave.com returns a useful result with their blended "text snippets across sites" / "AI" feature.

Searching for "mutt ignore certificate s/mime" will get you links to discussions of the problem and how to fix it.

Subject: [rescue] S/MIME and mutt

I figure if nobody *here* can answer this question, I'm probably SOL. :D

So I have multiple email accounts, some of which I read using
Thunderbird, one using mutt. One of my frequent correspondents on the
account I read in mutt has just switched to S/MIME signatures instead of
GnuPG/OpenPGP.

... And mutt correctly detects, extracts and processes the signature,
but is unable to validate the certificate.

I'm running 2.2.12 and have been unable to find a "get S/MIME working in
mutt" page for a version newer than 1.5. Can anyone help me out? I'm
99% sure it's just a configuration problem, but I can't find an
up-to-date document to tell me how to set it up.
