Hey Scott, Thanks. Its nice to know some folks still have some of these.
Yep, these beasts are getting harder and harder to find. But definitely an
elegant machine! Mine is in really nice shape too, so it pains me to see
its fate come to this issue. Its strange because mine passes self test and
even boots SunOS 4.1.1 but then hangs right after it passes the
ie0 ethernet adapter test which is where the CG4 test begins. Another
strange thing is that when I run the extended tests, the video tests (ve,
cm) are not on the list as per the prom users manual.
https://vtda.org/docs/computing/Sun/software/800-1736-10_PROMUsersManual_RevA_9May88.pdf
But they are also not available with my 3/60 and 3/80 either for some odd
reason. Do you know where the extended tests are stored? Are they part of
the boot PROM, or stored elsewhere? I did update my machines to the latest
boot PROMs but that was before the failure, so i know its not failing
because of the updated PROM.
Its hard to diagnose these VME bus machines without getting creative with
test leads. Plus the boards are multi-layer and i cant even see where the
trace is going from the capacitor in question. The fact that it shorts
across the solder vias worries me though unless there is an IC that is
pulled to ground when the board is deenergized. Hard to tell. That's why I
was hoping someone could corroborate this.
