I can understand the reason for disabling the kernel side by default, but
the latter seems like a gratuitous change to me, only to make people's
life harder. It wasn't like the dropping of a huge pile of hairy hard to
maintain code, but merely the removal of a pair of "case 2" labels from a
switch statement. After all there isn't much to be done here on the user
side as all the handling is in the kernel anyway. I'll see if I can chase
the rationale.
