TBH, ever since I first read about it, 15-20 years ago, I thought it
sounded like a _horrendously_ ugly kludge, one that gratuitously
rammed together radically different layers of the software stack in
pursuit of convenience.

About 15Y ago I described it to my then-lodger, a Perl and APL
programmer, and the expression of horrified revulsion on his face made
me think that it wasn't just me.

To hang storage devices off the other end of a network cable, the only
elegant solution I've ever seen was ATAoE.

That's from Coraid:

I never met him but I follow founder Brantley Coile on Linkedin and he
seems one of the smartest cookies in the entire industry to me.

(AIUI Coraid was the victim of some kind of VC buyout, nearly failed,
and Coile managed to buy up the remnants, relaunch it and regain
control... which suggests to me his smarts aren't limited to tech.)
