Somewhat off-topic, but I received a pair of Sun 6800s from our esteemed
member (cough), Dave McGuire. The 6800s power-up sequence is controlled by
the Frame Manager, which is a Sun SBC that lives in the top of the rack.
You power up the rack initially with a keyswitch in the Frame Manager.
Unfortunately the 6800 came with no key. I dismantled an FM to try and
figure out how much of a PITA it would be to rekey the lock. While it was
sitting on my bench I was moving around the Suns (3800 in a rack, 4800 in
rack, and the two 6800s) and noticed something jammed in one of the door
Sure enough, someone had snapped off a key in the lock. I spent at least
thirty minutes with some very fine screwdrivers before finally coaxing the
3/4" of key out of the tumbler, took it into my local rip-me-off-hardware
store and for $2 they cut me a key based on the partial key I provided.
Works a charm.
Completely unrelated, but a story for the list.
