Interesting -- thanks for the reply. I compared the datasheets, and
they do look almost identical. I noticed that one pin on the '59
becomes a second chip enable line on the '58, but on the '59 that pin
is apparently supposed to be pulled high so maybe it's not a problem
(or could be hacked around, I suppose). Have you actually substituted
a '58 with success?
