  how common was that design approach back then with major vendors? I
  have a couple (as in "2") old SNI PCs(*) that have the complete main
  system on an ISA card and where usually is a mainboard there is just
  a backplane. Haven't seen anything like that from IBM for example.


(*) PCD-4RA - a Desktop/Mintower 486
    PCD-4T - a *huge* Bigtower 486
    + Guts of a PCD-3T
