Okay, I dug through my serial cables and found cables I'd soldered up
myself without shells on the DE9s, so this time I'm sure the HP machine
has nothing but TX, RX, and GND connected - assuming, as I mpentioned,
that it's a peecee DE9 pinout.

I could buzz out the adapter. I suspect it's entirely passive, though
admittedly I have no specific evidence for that); I popped the plastic
shell open and...inside it is a metal shell which is soldered shut.

The adapter is an HP part, so presumably it's designed for use with
_some_ HP machine. I have circumstantial, but only circumstantial,
evidence that it's supposed to work with _this_ machine.

Tried that (a much newer monitor). Still nothing.

I've got a 'scope; I'm tempted to hook it up and see if I can get any
sort of waveform. If nothing on any sync pin nor on green video, well,
then there's no point trying to get any monitor to sync! If anything,
then at least I know where sync is present.

I could just wire up a cable; I've got DE15 connectors. The video
wouldn't have the proper impedance and such, but for these purposes I'd
put up with severe ghosting - and the cable would be short anyway,
reducing the issue.
