T'was I.  Yes, there is a huge problem, and the symptoms Mr Microcode
describes are just the tip of the iceberg.  I blame the socialists.  And
they're all socialists, even when they lie and tell you they're not.  And they
all lie.

By the way, I'm happy to say I didn't actually buy that pack of batteries,
just found the packaging on the ground :)
