Yes. More people are comfortable with a RHEL x86 box than Gentoo.

They prided themselves on nearly all of their software being open-
source, from Gentoo to using slurm to do job scheduling.  In general, it 
works pretty well.

Of course not. It's a lot of work for not much gain.
