I know there's a related short story by Robert Sheckley (The Laxian Key,
1954) in which the two ne'er-do-well protagonists buy a "Meldgen Free
Producer" from a junkyard for a very low price, on the grounds that
whatever it produces, if it produces it for free, they ought to be able
to make money selling it.
Hey, what could possibly go wrong with this plan...?
