Let me put in a word for what I have found to be a decent US History book:

A Patriot's History of the United States: From Columbus's Great 
Discovery to the War on Terror

by Larry Scheikart and Michael Allen

not from a leftist perspective, fair minded and covers multiple views of 
a subject if there are contentions about it.

Having grown up in Canada I did not have a good intro to American 
History - this book filled up a lot of gaps in my knowledge.

Even better, I have seen it on the remainder tables for $4.99 in some 
places.
