Apple has been working on resolution independence in OS X for a while  
now, though you can only enable it through some developer tools and  
even Apple's apps don't all work perfectly with it enabled.  The  
assumption is that eventually they'll get all the kinks worked out in  
all the APIs, and then encourage everyone to make their apps work  
100% with it.

They filed a patent on it a few years ago:

Anyone who argues against having the APIs and software support  
because the hardware is uncommon right now is just being silly.
