I'm running that setup to this day. I have a first-gen Mac Mini with a  
built-in 40GB 5400 rpm 2.5" drive and a Western Digital 500GB 16MB  
PATA drive in a FireWire enclosure. Indeed it runs much more smoothly  
than off the internal drive.
Not too long ago the internal SuperDrive starting acting flaky, so I  
added an HP external dual-layer burner and all is well again.

Sounds like a great application. I'll probably do the same when I  
upgrade to something more recent.
