ummm /usr/bin?  /usr/lib?  also /usr/sfw/{bin,lib} on my system.
you could front /usr with a cachefs in tmpfs.  then your ssss medium's
speed definitely wouldn't matter.  hmmm...  transparent overlay mount
disk on /var, so files you want to remain static could be in solid
state but logs wouldn't have to be, and no monkeying with log paths or
mount precedence.
