Can you pack everything except furniture onto 1 or 2 pallets in a way  
that it will travel safely?

Take the dishes and anything fragile in the car.

When I moved from Lancaster to Denver a while ago, I paid about $300  
to Roadway for shipping a skid of books.  Given that was may years  
ago, and you are traveling further, but a single skid cross country  
should be about $600 I think.
