I don't think MVS, etc. were ever free, but I got into mainframes in
1979 - I am nearly positive that once IBM had to start selling (as well
as lease) mainframes, there was a price for software - when all you
could do was rent the machines, there was probably a price, but it was
not a line item on your invoice for software...
