[geeks] Equivelents of SGI's FAM

On OSs like NetBSD and Solaris in particular (but also anything else unixy), 
by what methods does one achieve file monitering like SGI's FAM does, or is
better still?

For instance, FAM can only monitor a directory, not the sub directories.
Something that can do subdirectories would be really great.

Obviously, ones application can just repeatedly pole the directory 
structure, but that seems suboptimal from a resource usage point of view.
