The 21" has two monitor inputs - a built-in 13W3 cable, and then a 
HD15F (to hook to a PC or something with HD15 via a M-M cable).

I unhooked the 13w3-with-HD15M adapter from the back of the Mac, and
plugged in the straight HD15 cable, and it works fine.  I then moved
the 13W3 cable with HD15 adapter over to the PC, and it works fine
there.

problem solved. 8-)
