Because we don't know how to make non-defective products, in that
particular product space.
The difference between Microsoft crapware and "better" systems like VMS
or even the BSDs is very hard to codify. Indeed, a plausible case
could be made that the only substantive difference is that the former
has gathered all the cracker attention. (Not that I would make such a
case; I think there are real differences...but I don't know Windows
internals *nearly* as well as I know NetBSD, or even VMS, internals.
But I also think monocultures are inherently dangerous, in ways that
apply no matter which particular culture it is.)
