Sun drops “Sun Linux” distribution

According to this eWeek article, Sun has dropped its custom “Sun Linux” distribution, which was based on Red Hat Linux Advanced Server, and will be concentrating on supporting between two and four standard Linux distributions rather than taking one and customizing it for distribution as “Sun Linux”.

Sun advisory about SRAM on high-end systems

Sun has updated an alert, originally issued in January, about L2 SRAM problems on some high-end systems. “Sun has identified an issue with L2 SRAM parameter settings on Sun Fire 3800/4800/4810/6800, Sun Fire 12K/15K, Sun Fire V1280 and Netra 1280 systems. This issue may cause L2 SRAM errors to be produced, which can lead to domain panics or hangs.”

Interview with Dr. Marc Tremblay

We’ve just published our latest article, an interview with Sun
Distinguished Engineer Dr. Marc Tremblay. Dr. Tremblay was the
co-architect of Sun’s first 64-bit processor, the UltraSPARC-I and served
as chief architect for the UltraSPARC-II and the dual-core MAJC project.
He is currently working on a highly multithreaded processor expected to
deliver 30 times the throughput of the current 1.2 GHz UltraSPARC III.

He sits down with us to talk about the architectural details of on-chip
multithreading, on-chip multiprocessing, high-bandwidth memory interfaces,
and shares his insight on how CPU architects will target server workloads

Sun gives away software in south Asia

According to this NEWS.COM article, Sun is giving away $700 million worth of software (including Solaris 9, StarOffice, and Web Services development tools) to educational institutions and research facilities in south Asia.
