SECURITY HOLE IN SOLARIS XFS

Internet Security Systems has discovered a buffer overflow
vulnerability in xfs (X Windows Font Service) in Solaris 2.5.1
through Solaris 9 on both SPARC and Intel/X86 platforms. Sun is
working on a patch.

NEXTCOM ANNOUNCES ULTRASPARC-IIi-BASED 650MHZ LAPTOP

NextCom has released a powerful new Solaris 8 or Solaris 9 based
mobile server and laptop, the NCM-767PH, which is based on Sun’s
650Mhz UltraSPARCIIi processor and includes a 15″ 1400×1050
resolution LCD display, up to a 60GB hard drive and external SCSI
controller.

In part two of this Q and A, Sun’s Solaris Product Manager, Larry
Wake, fields more questions from Solaris administrators attending
the LISA 2002 conference in Philadelphia. Topics covered run the
gammit from Sun’s philosophy on QFS versus UFS to what Sun is doing
to impove the patching process and reboot times. Wake also explained
why Solaris 9 does not ship with the most current releases of certain
software including Netscape and Perl.

END-OF-FEATURE ANNOUNCEMENT FOR NIS+

Sun has announced the “End-Of-Feature” for NIS+, and
that it will not be included in any future releases of
Solaris past Solaris 9. Sun is replacing it with LDAP.
Support, however, will be available for five years past
when it is actually removed from Solaris.Link
