On October 28, 2002, Sun announced the availability of the
Sun ONE Application Server 7, Platform Edition and Standard
Edition. The Sun ONE Application Server 7 product, tightly
integrated with the new Sun ONE Studio Enterprise Edition 4
Update 1 and Sun ONE Application Framework 2.0, is a newly
architected application server that has many new features
that enhance the developer experience for creating,
assembling and deploying web applications. This new version
of the application server is J2EE 1.3 compatible. In
addition the Sun ONE Application Server 7 provides the basis
for an integration platform with built-in support for web
services standards such as SOAP and WSDL, plus tools and
support for the J2EE Connector Architecture.
Sun ONE Application Server 7, Platform Edition is free for
development and deployment on all major operating systems
and Sun ONE Application Server 7, Standard Edition, which
provides remote management capabilities, is available for
$2,000/CPU.

This announcement applies only to 32-bit static system libraries and
statically linked utilites. 64-bit static system libraries and utilities
have never been provided. The Solaris Application Binary Interface (ABI)
is provided through dynamic system libraries. All Solaris applications should
be linked with the Solaris dynamic system libraries. 32-bit applications
linked with Solaris static system libraries do not utilize the Solaris ABI.
Support for 32-bit Solaris static system libraries and statically linked
utilities will not be provided in a future release. Of particular note,
support for the static C library (/usr/lib/libc.a) will not be provided in a

9 for x86 processors. SearchSolaris.com spoke with Chris Baker, Sun’s
Product Manager for Solaris x86, about his company’s decision to charge for
the formerly free operating system and the level of support users can expect
once they buy.
