On May 22nd, Sun Microsystems introduced the Solaris[tm] 9
Operating Environment. With the integration of an
application server, and by providing the foundation for
identity management, Sun redefines the operating system as a
services platform. The Solaris 9 OE delivers the security,
manageability and performance that enterprises need to
increase service levels and decrease costs and risks.Link
Sun has apparently changed their Free Solaris licensing
program. Solaris used to be free for noncommercial use on any
system with less than eight CPUs; it appears that it is now only
free for noncommercial use on systems with ONE processor. I guess
Sun doesent think that people might own multi-CPU systems at home.
Feel free to send me your comments or thoughts – I’ll start posting
a “reader review” section on both Solaris 9 and the new licensing
scheme for home/nonprofit use.
